What is your speciality?
Asian Cuisine

Who is chef idol?
Local - Humphrey Navarro, Aro Tapiador
Foreign - Nobuyaki Matsuhisa, Thomas Keller and Charlie Trotter

What haven't you cooked?

Dog and goat meat

So far what is the most memorable you have eaten?

Ngohiong

When and where?
last year in downtown Cebu.

What do you see happening in the culinary industry?

It will continue growing and be more interesting. People will still stick with the usual food bacause it's all about value for money. Consumers should always get their money's worth. Aside from that, future cuisine will be interesting. Filipinos are very up to date to trends that's why I feel we wont be left behind.

What do you like wearing when cooking?

I like it rugged---jeans, clogs or rubber shoes, skimpy apron, a towel over my shoulder and jacket.

When was the last time the dish you cooked sucked?

When I was working in a fine dining resto then, all big names were there.... even the President of the Philippines was there that night. A bigtime socialite orders a rib eye steak, medium rare, and by mistake, i gave her a well done. Another one was when I was cooking for my family. I had a lapse in thinking. I was rushing to finish the food 'cause I had work that same day, was seasoning the sauce with sugar and accidentally used salt instead. Booboo! They joke me about it until now.

What will you cook on your last day here on earth?

Brother's burger with clantro cream, fries and onion rings

If you're going to quit your job, what do you want to do next?  To put up my own resto and teach.

50 Pesos Meal

What is the value of 50 bucks nowadays? It can give me two decent FX rides from Taft to QC. It can probably get me a gel and a sachet of shampoo from the convenience store for my date tonight. But for food hunters like me, I always doubted that 50 pesos can buy me a mouth watering, stomach filling snack or meal. I mean, c'mon! One liter of unleaded gas is how much already? 50 pesos can't even give me a fashionable haircut worth my mom's smoldering attention.

In these trying economic times, people nowadays tend to cut their budget for eating. Especially for those people working and are always on the go, they resort to cheaper ways so they can tighten their belts until the next payday comes along.

Jollibee

First stop is everyone's favorite fast food chain. Jollibee had at least 3 different offerings that were 39 pesos only. I tried the beef strip, spring rolls and burger steak. Much to my surprise, they are pretty tasty and served well. All had rice and small serving of vegetables. And all were really good. I think it was worth way more than 39 pesos. Try the beef strips. The sauce is first class and IT was really tasty!

Chowking

Chowking has 50 peso winners stashed in their menu too. They took pride of their 49ers when I asked what is available for 50 Pesos. I tried out 3 49ers meals. Chicken Kikiam is definitely my favorite. It had that authentic Chinatown flavor. Their Wanton Noodles and Chowfan meals were pretty much satisfactory. The serving is surprisingly pretty generous. All of that sumptuous Chinese dishes for 49 pesos each! And all had a regular serving of soft drinks. Worth it? Definitely!

Hongkong style Noodles

The next day I saw a good number of people lining up over at Hong Kong Noodles and was curious about it. No wonder they had long queues, they have food for as low as 27 pesos! With my 50 peso budget I had a cool serving of fried noodles, 2 pieces of siomai with my choice of sauces---just the way I like it. It was really good and tasty! Everything here is served fast on the dot so you don’t have to worry about missing the bus if you are on the go.

Waffle Time

I then came across Waffle Time hotdogs on the way home. I was able to buy 3 hotdogs for my friends for only 50 pesos. It can be a little bit “bitin” but for those people who just need to calm a rumbling belly, I think this is a great choice. Easy to eat and in a way, filling! The waffle is perfect I tell you.

Burger Machine

Last store that I got to check is Burger Machine. They had a buy one take one Jumbo Burger deal for only 35 pesos. It was something I could would not dare miss out.. Imagine the soft Burger Machine patties (really beefy I might add) sandwiched in toasted buns with 3 different sauces to choose from. Add an Iced tea and you have your 47 peso value meal. Twice the pure beef goodness for 50 bucks? Crazy!

I like the burger steak ala pobre better than the regular burger and where's-the-mushroom sauce.. ^_^ lurv the garlic flava on the burgersteak.. Gosh, I have to say this.. but the Hong Kong style noodles.. Everyday, going to school I see 3-4 stalls (on LRT stations and malls), I just hated the "deconstruction" idea.. I like the waffle time section. In addition to the friendly service, I like both choco and cheese, the bacon+mayo filling, german cheese franks, err.. blue berry anyone? ^_^

SISIG SANCTUARIES THAT SIZZLE THE METRO

I scoured the Metro to give homage to the king of all bar foods, sisig. This journey took me to five destinations that offer the best versions of this authentic Filipino dish. It might vary in the way it is served, paper plate in a kiosk beside MRT or hot plate in a fine dining restaurant, but I know that everyone will agree with me that as Shakespeare puts it: "A sisig by any other form will still taste as sweet." Or something of the same effect. Read More
